QUEST: SCIENCE FOR SOUTH AFRICA

The popular science magazine, Quest: Science for South Africa, is now more than four years old. It was launched in 2004 by the Academy of Science of South Africa as a shop window for science in action, and its role is to publicize and celebrate the country’s continuing achievements.

The magazine appears quarterly, bringing readers up to date about South Africa’s scientific research. One of its goals is to inspire the senior years at secondary school level, but it also reaches students, the scientific community and academics, and decision-makers in government and in the private sector.

The editor is Dr Bridget Farham, one of South Africa’s most experienced science writers. Quest draws its material from peer-reviewed journals that carry original research. It allows scientists and specialists in many fields to report on material that they have published in authoritative articles in the professional literature, so that their findings and discoveries reach a wider audience.

The reporting in Quest presents scientific and technological achievements in a way that makes them understandable to the general public and illustrated in full colour. For readers who want to pursue a topic in more depth, Quest gives references to original articles in the scientific literature and suggestions for further reading and for websites to visit.

The Academy seeks to bridge the gap between specialists and the public by inviting editors, as well as writers, of articles that could be of wider interest to bring them to the attention of the editor of Quest (e-mail: ugqirha@iafrica.com). Quest covers the spectrum of science from the natural sciences and technology to the human sciences, wherever research is evidence-based and applies scientific method that suits the discipline.
